How to read a Charter Party

  1. Identify parties, vessel and contractual form/version.
  2. Check commercial boxes / main particulars.
  3. Read payment, time and performance provisions.
  4. Identify incorporated rider clauses and amendments.
  5. Check hierarchy / precedence between recap, printed form and riders.
  6. Map each clause to operational responsibility and financial exposure.

Contract review mindset

Do not ask only “what does this clause say?”. Ask: Who must do what? By when? What evidence is required? What happens if it is not done? Who pays? Which event triggers the right or liability?
